Short Reviews: Sucker Punch (2011)


Jean-Luc Goddard famously quipped “all you need for a movie is a gun and a girl.” This has never been more depressingly true than in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch.

Essentially a feature length anthology of music videos, the “plot” is essentially Inception as seen through the crusty sheets of a prolific wet-dreamer.

First played as a female-empowerment piece, Snyder then back pedalled and claimed it was a satire of the audiences who would find this mess of exploitation and quasi-fetishism appealing…you know by playing straight into their hands.

The visuals are impressive but without a resonating plot to tie them into, they’re instead just empty eye-candy – sweet but lacking any substance. There are no stakes to be raised if the action on screen is knowingly an illusion in the protagonist’s mind.

Snyder’s last-minute attempt to make the film a mind-screw only highlights the lack of merit in the story, and what we’re left with is a film that tries to make the institutional subjugation of young women into a sexy affair.

It’s capably acted, I suppose, and I’d be lying if I didn’t say the soundtrack is pretty effective. The visuals do well to show off a new TV to your friends, as does the sound mix on the BluRay, but ultimately it’s an empty affair that’s been done better in other films.

Worth seeing if you want to take your mind off things, but rife with unfortunate implications and the sense that it’s a film that’s been made to show off the latest special effects and the latest nubile ladies in skimpy outfits.

  1. I think I’ll miss this one. It suddenly seems that there are all these filmmakers quite seriously convinced that saying “it’s a satire” is actually a legitimate and cover-all defense for literally everything BAD.

The problem is, the bare bones of the story were good enough, but completely undercut with lazy storytelling and execution of ideas; it seems like Snyder thought that deciding to end on a confusing note would give him Mulholland Drive-… acclaim, when what it boils down to is “Girl’s about to have a lobotomy and in the milliseconds before the hammer hits has a wild fantasy…then another character swoops in to give the movie an ending.”
